Breaking the Spell of Thought
Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or
good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of
which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one
thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before
from anything.
Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty
hands unto your God.
A Course in Miracles Lesson 189
We enter this world with no self-image. As time goes by we gradually
create one. What we create depends upon our conditioning, religion,
race, sex, experiences in life, whether we are loved or not, our
education, and many other factors. We are actually a bundle of
memories, habits and conditioning. All of this is thought. If these
thoughts are believed then we have created a self.
As we acquire new experiences the image of oneself changes. If we
experience trauma in our lives, this may lead us to feel we are a
victim. Old thoughts we once believed in will be released, and new
thoughts will be taken on. In this way, the images of ourselves
constantly changes. If we do not step back and watch this image, and
see it as but a thought we believe in, we will lead our lives as if
in a trance.
A Course in Miracles asks us to forgive this image, to stand back
and look at it without judgement. In this way it starts to lose its
power over us. The identification with this image is normally very
strong in us. It does not appear to be an image, but who we really
are. If someone says to us something that contradicts the image we
hold, this can be quite painful. Our egos will inform us that this
is unjust, and counsels us to attack.
Thoughts have no power in themselves. It is when we believe in them
that they become important and affect our lives. If we look back
upon our lives we will discover thoughts we took very seriously
then, but no longer do. What has changed? The belief in the thought
as being true and important.
If you are willing to renounce the role of guardian of your thought
system and open it to me, I will correct it very gently and lead you
back to God.
T4.I.4:7
We spend much time protecting and defending our self-image.
After all, this is what we believe we are. Our security lies
in what we believe to be true. If our thought system is threatened,
our security is threatened. When Jesus preached in Palestine, he
strongly challenged the thought system of the priesthood. This
produced a strong insecurity and fear in their minds. His message of
love was seen as a threat and had to be attacked.
If we study various cultures, we quickly find that what is important
in one culture is unimportant in another. If we also look at just
one culture, but in different time periods of its history, again we
will see that what was deemed important once may no longer be so.
The Course teaches us that our true identity is the Christ. We are
eternal, formless, perfect spirit. We are not bodies and
personalities. We are not male or female. This is all body
identification. All the labels we ascribe to ourselves are thoughts
that we believe in, and we are happy to go to war to defend them. My
religion versus your religion, democracy versus communism, etc.
The Course wants us to stand back and look at all the images
we have created over our lives and ask ourselves - are these true?
Or are they just thoughts we have given importance to for a while.
As Byron Katie has said "Who would we be without our story?".
The world can teach no images of you unless you want to learn them.
There will come a time when images have all gone by, and you will
see you know not what you are. It is to this unsealed and open mind
that truth returns, unhindered and unbound. Where concepts of the
self have been laid by is truth revealed exactly as it is. When
every concept has been raised to doubt and question, and been
recognized as made on no assumptions that would stand the light,
then is the truth left free to enter in its sanctuary, clean and
free of guilt. There is no statement that the world is more afraid
to hear than this:
I do not know the thing I am, and therefore do not know what I am
doing, where I am, or how to look upon the world or on myself.
Yet in this learning is salvation born. And What you are will tell
you of Itself.
T-31.V.17.
Whilst our mind contains powerful images of who we think we are,
there is no space for truth to enter, as the above quote points out.
There's great fear associated with letting go who we think we
are. We believe that without our self-created image we would
be nothing. But these images stand in front of the truth and obscure
it.
As the sun on rising makes the world active, so does self-awareness
affect changes in the mind. In the light of calm and steady
self-awareness, inner energies wake up and work miracles without any
effort on your part.
Nisargadatta Maharaj
How can all this be changed so truth can dawn upon our minds and we
can remember the peace of God? If the images we hold about ourselves
were created by taking thought seriously, we can reverse the
process. We are so used to giving serious attention to the thoughts
that arise in our minds. Instead, we could watch these images arise
but without taking them as being important. Our thoughts are
accustomed to be taken seriously. What would happen if we paid less
attention to them? They would not be 'fed'. Thoughts coming and
going in our mind would start to be treated like various odours
coming in and out of our nose.
Forgiveness ... is still, and quietly does nothing. .... It
merely looks, and waits, and judges not.
W-pII.1.4:1,3
We need to break the spell of thought. We have thoughts, but we're
not our thoughts.
You do not know the meaning of anything you perceive. Not one
thought you hold is wholly true. The recognition of this is your
firm beginning. You are not misguided; you have accepted no guide at
all. Instruction in perception is your great need, for you
understand nothing. Recognize this but do not accept it, for
understanding is your inheritance. Perceptions are learned, and you
are not without a Teacher. Yet your willingness to learn of Him
depends on your willingness to question everything you learned of
yourself, for you who learned amiss should not be your own teacher.
T-11.VIII.3.
The mind has a very important function. None of us could
survive in the world without it. The American teacher Adyashanti
refers to that aspect of the mind as "toolbox mind." You need it to
read this article, drive a car, understand the computer. If the mind
could stay in that sphere of operation everything would be fine.
However, we seek to use it in areas that is not designed for. It
should not tell us who we are. That will be revealed to us when our
mind becomes quiet. As the quote above emphasised:
Yet in this learning is salvation born. And What you are will tell
you of Itself.
T-31.V.17.
The truth of who we are cannot be learned through the mind. All
images of ourselves just block the awakening to truth. If we think
we know who we are, truth must wait. We need to give God a gap. Our
ceaseless thinking and image-making draws a veil across the truth.
As we start to challenge our mind by not taking the images it
creates seriously we start to starve the mind. Eventually, the mind
will revert to its true function, a wonderful practical tool to help
us live life here. Now a space has been created that allows
the intuitive wisdom of spirit to guide our lives.
What is hidden deep in our innermost being lies in silence and
stillness, and in the silence of the deep springs the eternal,
inexhaustible, original source of all being. Countless words trouble
the soul; where words fall silent, the everlasting begins. Keeping
inwardly silent before God is the implicit precondition for
perceiving the everlasting within us. If God is to speak, then all
thinking, imagining, and supposing must stay quiet. All faculties
must remain silent and prepare a place of inner stillness for God to
speak in us.

How Do I Realise Who I Really Am?
From I Am That by Nisargadatta
Maharaj
Do understand that you are destined for enlightenment. Co-operate
with your destiny, dont go against it, dont thwart it. Allow it to
fulfil itself. All you have to do is to give attention to the
obstacles created by the foolish mind.
There are no conditions to fulfil. There is nothing to be done,
nothing to be given up. Just look and remember, whatever you
perceive is not you, nor yours. It is there in the field of
consciousness, but you are not the field and its contents, nor even
the knower of the field. It is your idea that you have to do things
that entangle you in results of your efforts- the motive, the
desire, the failure to achieve, the sense of frustration-all this
holds you back. Simply look at whatever happens and know that you
are beyond it.
The real exists and is of the nature of witness-consciousness.
Of course it is beyond the witness, but to enter it one must first
realise the state of pure witnessing....The witness is the
reflection of the real in all its purity....The state of witnessing
is full of power.
You need not get at it (Enlightenment), for you are it. It will get
at you, if you give it a chance. Let go your attachment to the
unreal and the real will swiftly and smoothly slip into its own.
Stop imagining yourself being or doing this or that and the
realisation that you are the source and heart of all will dawn upon
you. With this will come great love which is not choice or
predilection, nor attachment, but a power which makes all things
love - worthy and lovable.
.....It is only when the mind refuses to flow with life, and gets
stuck at the banks, that it becomes a problem. By flowing with life,
I mean acceptance - letting come what comes and go what goes. Desire
not, fear not, observe the actual, as and when it happens, for you
are not what happens, you are to whom it happens. Ultimately even
the observer you are not.
Discover all you are not. Body, feelings, thoughts, ideas, time,
space, being and not being, this or that - nothing concrete or
abstract you can point out to is you. You must watch yourself
continuously - particularly your mind - moment by moment, missing
nothing. This witnessing is essential for the separation of the self
from the not-self ........be aware of that state which is only,
simply being, without being this or that or the other.
I see what you too could see, here and now, but for the wrong
focus of attention. You give no attention to your self. Your mind is
all with things, people and ideas, never with your self. Bring
yourself into focus, become aware of your own existence.
See how you function, watch the motives and the results of your
actions. Study the prison you have built around yourself, by
inadvertence. By knowing what you are not, you come to know your
self. The way back to your self is through refusal and rejection.
One thing is certain: the real is not imaginary, it is not a product
of the mind.
When you are no longer attached to anything, you have done your
share. The rest will be done for you.
DonÕt look for quick results, there may be none within your
noticing. Unknown to you, your psyche will under go a change, there
will be more clarity in your thinking and feeling, purity in your
behaviour. You need not aim at these - you will witness the change
all the same.
Whenever a thought or emotion of desire or fear comes to your mind,
just turn away from it......just refuse attention......just turn
away.....look between the thoughts....when you do not resist, you
meet with no resistance......turn away from your desires and fears
and from the thoughts they create and you are at once in your
natural state.
The Supreme is the easiest to reach for it is your very being. It is
enough to stop thinking and desiring anything, but the Supreme.
Humility and silence are essential, however advanced.
Live your life without hurting anybody. Harmlessness is a most
powerful form of Yoga and it will take you speedily to your goal.
What is seedless and rootless, what does not sprout and grow, flower
and fruit, what comes into being suddenly and in full glory,
mysteriously and marvelously, you may call that ÔgodÕ It is entirely
unexpected yet inevitable, infinitely familiar yet most surprising,
beyond all hope yet absolutely certain....You can do nothing to
bring it about, but you can avoid creating obstacles. Watch your
mind, how it comes into being, how it operates. As you watch your
mind, you discover your self as the watcher. When you stand
motionless, only watching, you discover your self as the light
behind the watcher. The source of light is dark, unknown is the
source of knowledge. That source alone is. Go back to that source
and abide there.
You have to be very alert, or else your mind will play false with
you. It is like watching a thief - not that you expect anything from
a thief, but you do not want to be robbed. In the same way you give
a lot of attention to the mind without expecting anything from it.
By giving attention to your living, feeling and thinking, you free
yourself from them and go beyond them. Your personality dissolves
and only the witness remains. Then you go beyond the witness. Do not
ask how it happens. Just search within yourself....In one [person]
you desire and fear, in the other [witness] you are unaffected by
pleasure and pain and are not ruffled by events. You let them come
and go.
See the event as event only, the transient as transient, experience
as mere experience and you have done all you can. Then you are
vulnerable to reality, no longer armoured against it, as you were
when you gave reality to events and experiences. But as soon as
there is some like or dislike, you have drawn a screen.
When you demand nothing of the world, nor of God, when you want
nothing, seek nothing, expect nothing then the Supreme State will
come to you uninvited and unexpected!

Adyashanti Quotes
That Which Contains All
It doesn't matter how profound a vision is or how wonderful the
kriyas, or the kundalini, or the bliss. No matter how beautiful the
spiritual experience is, it is only an experience, and experiences
come and go.
Freedom is found only in that which does not come and go. If it
doesn't come and go, that means that it's present now.
When you have a beautiful spiritual experience and then seem to lose
it, ask yourself: What was present then that is still present now?
Then, you know where to put all of your attention, all of your
dedication, and all of your heart. Don't put it anywhere else.
You are that permanence which contains all becoming and all
be-going.
What Always Is?
Most people fret about losing this state or that state. They get
caught up in what's not present anymore. That which comes and goes
is not real; quit chasing it. It doesn't matter.
What haven't you lost? That is what's important. What always is?
What is there in bliss and in misery? Who you are is always present
and is always the same.
That which doesn't come and go is real. That is where Freedom is
found -- nowhere else.
Go Deeply into the Unknown
You must go so deeply into the Unknown that you are no longer
referencing thought to tell you who and what you are. Only then will
thought be capable of reflecting that which is true, rather than
falsely masquerading as truth.
What I am talking about is a condition where the mind never fixates,
where it never closes, where it has no compulsive need to understand
in terms of ideas, concepts, and beliefs. A condition where you are
no longer referencing the mind, feeling, or emotions for security in
any way.
What I am talking about is the complete surrender of all
separateness until liberation becomes a permanent condition, and you
are forever lost in the freedom of the Absolute.
Addicted to Being Separate
Many people are addicted to, and identified with, being the separate
and unique victims of the tragic dramas of their lives. People so
often form the deepest bonds with one another by sharing the painful
and tragic episodes of their lives, as if those episodes define who
they really are.
Many people really see themselves as "the one who has struggled,"
and "the one who is struggling now." Others struggle to hold onto a
more positive, fixed identity as a good, successful, or spiritual
person.
However, most people cling to both negative and positive self
images, creating an endless struggle between contradictory
identities that have no fundamental reality to begin with. Is it any
wonder that so many spiritual seekers remain so confused?
Awaken from the Dream
The most insidious and unconscious way that spiritual seekers
struggle is by struggling with practices and techniques that are
supposed to help them stop struggling.
But who has the biggest investment in these practices? The sense of
a separate self, or ego, does. Only the ego asks how to stop
struggling because all how-to questions lead to further struggle.
This mechanism of maintaining struggle is how the ego maintains
control. Struggling only ceases when you passionately inquire into
who and what you truly are -- deeply enough to awaken from the dream
of being a personal, separate self.
Stop Struggling
The most challenging thing for the spiritual seeker to do is to stop
struggling. The human condition is characterized by a constant state
of struggle which manifests as conflict, fear, and confusion.
These various states of tension, caused by the compulsive and
mechanical impulse to struggle, distort our ability to perceive what
is true and liberating. What is truly interesting is that the human
condition contains within it an unconscious need to struggle. Why?
Because by remaining in a state of constant struggle we maintain the
boundaries that create the sense of a separate self, a self who
unconsciously defines itself as "the one who struggles."
And even more shocking is the discovery that not only do we need to
struggle in order to remain separate, but we want to remain separate
-- even though it causes so much suffering, fear, and confusion. We
want to remain separate because by remaining separate we maintain
the sense of being someone different, special, and unique.
Be More Interested in the Unknown
The aim of spiritual practice is to discover in your own present
experience That which the movement of thought never touches.
This does not mean to suppress the thinking mind, nor does I mean to
attempt to understand by using thought.
What I am pointing toward is the Unknown: the already, ever-present,
silent, still source that not only proceeds thought but surrounds
it.
You must become more interested in the Unknown than in that which is
known. Otherwise, you will remain enslaved by the very narrow and
distorted perspective of conceptual thinking.

Surrendering to the Light: Undoing the Ego
from the perspective of A Course in Miracles
Love waits on welcome, not on time.
Release is given you the instant you desire it.
(A Course in Miracles)
The Course teaches us that we do not know the way home and need to
be guided from within. Realising we know nothing about discovering
our inner joy and peace, the workshop aims to explore the path of
humility and surrender to allow truth to reveal itself to us.
As we approach the light our ego will become fearful and will resist
its own undoing. Our minds do not want to release control and seek
to be in charge of our spiritual path. Only by stopping, letting go,
relaxing, trust and surrender can we fully open to the love, wisdom
and peace within us.
We play our part by discovering the obstacles to love and releasing
them through forgiveness.
Workshop subjects will include: the nature of the ego, no path to
God, fear of love, not knowing the way, awareness, "I need do
nothing", being in the present and forgiveness.
Exercises will be used to help us undo the ego and move into the
present moment.
No knowledge of A Course in Miracles is required.

Meaningful Relationships
- finding peace and growth in the mirror of relationships.
From the perspective of A Course in Miracles
When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you
see him you will see yourself.
As you treat him you will treat yourself. As you think of him
you will think of yourself.
Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose
yourself.
A Course in Miracles.
The world is a mirror to our state of mind. Relationships do not
have the power to give or take our peace. Each difficult encounter
with those we meet - children, friend, partner, parent, boss, or
stranger - gives us another opportunity to see what is unhealed and
unforgiven in our minds.
Forgiveness looks gently and without judgement at the disturbances
in our minds thus allowing them to be released. As our judgements
are healed our eternal spiritual reality of quiet joy and inner
peace starts to dawn upon our minds.
Exercises will be used to see how we deny and project our unhealed
parts onto others and how they can be healed through forgiveness and
inner guidance.

Biography
Michael discovered A Course in Miracles whilst visiting the Findhorn
Foundation in 1982. He subsequently became a member of the
Foundation for about six years and involved himself with healing and
teaching. In 1994 he published Healing the Cause - A Path of
Forgiveness which serves as an introduction to the Course. His
second book, The Findhorn Book of Forgiveness (Findhorn Press) uses
exercises, stories and case histories to guide the reader to inner
peace through forgiveness. Michael now lives in Australia and gives
workshops on the Course world-wide.

Audio Tapes and CDs:
Healing the Cause:
Since 1986 I have been conducting healing workshops in the UK and
abroad, and have continually experimented to find healing and
forgiveness exercises that are effective. I have found that a
particular exercise can be effective for one person but not another.
Accordingly, I was led to develop a series of exercises. Over the
years workshop participants asked if these exercises could be put
onto audio cassettes and CDs so they could repeat them. This has
resulted in the Healing the Cause - Exercise series - Tapes 1 to 4
(2 exercises on each tape) and CD1 and 2 (4 exercises on each CD)

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTATIONS
About three or four times a week I send a short quotation from some
spiritual teacher or poet to people who have requested some
uplifting thoughts. I have included some below. If you wish I can
add your name to the email list.
How long, O Son of God, will you maintain the game of sin? Shall we
not put away these sharp-edged children's toys? How soon will you be
ready to come home? Perhaps today? There is no sin. Creation is
unchanged. Would you still hold return to Heaven back? How long, O
holy Son of God, how long?
A Course in Miracles Lesson 250
Do understand that you are destined for enlightenment.
Co-operate with your destiny, don't go against it, don't thwart it.
Allow it to fulfil itself.
All you have to do is to give attention to the obstacles created by
the foolish mind.
Nisargadatta Maharaj
When you listen to the voice in your head, that
is to say, do not judge. You'll soon realize: there
is the voice, and here I am listening to it, watching
it. This I am realization, this sense of your own
presence, is not a thought. It arises from beyond
the mind.
Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Now
One is more likely to awaken through surrender than through seeking
to waken. The effort to awaken is the effort of ego, whereas to
surrender is to give up all efforts and to place oneself in the
hands of a vast force that is more powerful than any realization of
non duality.
When one finally gives up one's futile attempts to make reality
conform to one's own wishes, and allows it to unfold on its own
terms, all the energy that was tied up in foolish attempts to
manipulate the universe is freed up.
